Step 1: Search for a credit union near you

Joining a credit union is easy once you do your research. Most credit unions accept members based on location, typically within a radius of a few counties around you. They also accept family members of these members, even if they live in other areas.
Some credit unions are a bit more specialized, only accepting members in both a certain radius and certain professions. There are credit unions that specifically tailor to teachers, first responders, medical personnel, those in select military branches, etc.
If you come across these credit unions during your search, then understand that you must live within a certain area but also work in the field that the credit union is based on.
Step 2: Apply and become a credit union member for life
The wonderful thing about credit unions is that when you join, you are a member for life! This means that if you move, switch professions, etc., you are still able to keep your membership. That’s the #CreditUnionWay.
Requirements to open a credit union account
To join a credit union, all you have to do is visit the website of the one you qualify for. Many sites have an electronic application you can fill out.
Should you be accepted, you will then be asked to deposit a minimum of $5.00 into your share draft account (checking account). These $5.00 represent your ownership in the credit union (That’s right, you OWN part of the credit union!).
Unlike banks, credit unions use our members’ money to lend to other members. In other words, if you were to apply for an auto loan or credit card, the money you borrow would come from your fellow credit union members.
Step 3: Call, apply online, or visit the credit union in person
If you’re not a fan of online applications and prefer human interaction, you can email or call the credit union to talk about membership. Some credit unions even offer appointments for you to come visit in person.
